Cox made appearances on several television shows before landing Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” in 2012. For this, she was the first transgender actress nominated for a Primetime Emmy. Laverne Cox was recognized again by being a four-time Emmy nominated actress and an Emmy winning producer. She made appearances as the first trans woman to be featured on numerous magazine covers, including TIME and British Vogue. Cox continues to use her presence to advocate for transgender and LGBTQIA+ rights, emphasizing the need for more trans representation in media. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

King displayed her talents on the court at an early age, leading her to go professional in 1968 when she claimed the world’s No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis. In addition to winning numerous tournaments and titles, she bested men’s champion Bobby Riggs in 1973, a match infamously know as the “Battle of the Sexes.” Billie Jean King championed equal pay for women in tennis, and she further broke boundaries by becoming one of the first women to coach professional male athletes. King’s sexuality became public in 1981 after a lawsuit involving her former female assistant and lover. She lost endorsements but became a major figure in the LGBTQIA+ community. To this day, King continues to advocate for women in sports and LGBTQIA+ rights. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️We’re celebrating 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️We’re celebrating Pride Month by honoring incredible LGBTQIA+ women throughout history! First up is Marsha “Pay it No Mind” Johnson (1945-1992). Johnson was a self-identified drag queen, performer, and activist for the LGBTQIA+ community, especially POC members. She became a significant figure during the Stonewall uprising in 1969, instigating the resistance that became a pivotal moment for the gay liberation movement in the United States. Along with activist Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson established Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), which supported homeless transgender youth in New York City. Johnson was tragically murdered in 1992, and her case was reopened for investigation in 2012. To this day, Marsha P. Johnson’s legacy inspires many to continue to fight for the rights of trans people and other LGBTQIA+ members. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
